About Us

Kenneth A. Smaltz Sr. better known as “Micky” was a husband, father, brother and a man of the community. He worked for the NYC Fire Department for 22 years, where he retired as a Fire Marshall.  He then worked for the post office where he retired after 20 years. The first signs of dementia began in his 60’s. For nearly 10 years, my sister and I were his primary caregivers. As the disease progressed it became increasingly difficult to monitor and take care of his needs at home.

In search of answers and support I found the Parker Jewish Institute’s “Alzheimer Center”, a day care program for people with dementia. The respite, support and advice of the care center was essential to our family’s understanding and calm in facing the disease. My father attended the center for three years where he engaged in activities in a safe and caring environment. Alzheimer’s is called the long goodbye because you slowly watch the recognition of your loved one dissipate. We said goodbye until his final rest on Dec. 6th 2013. He is this foundation’s inspiration and he is missed.

Founder

Kenneth A. Smaltz Jr. is a businessman and philanthropist, who built a successful business and became a leader in his field as a rare coins dealer. It was when Ken Sr. began showing signs of dementia, Ken Jr. moved him into his home. For nearly 10 years, Ken and his sister were primary caregivers for his father.

In 2008, Ken met Martha Wolf, Director at Parker Jewish Institute’s Alzheimer Center, and placed his father in their adult day care center. During the time that Ken’s father participated in adult day services, Ken realized what a valuable service adult day centers were for caregivers in the community who were trying to juggle their lives and also take care of loved ones at home.
